Cochin
Kochi is Kerala’s premier city. A city filled with glamour and endowed with tradition, it is also Kerala’s financial capital. Moreover, it is the perfect city to visit by day or by night. If the fact that it was the first city to have Arabian and Chinese ties doesn’t impress you; then you must visit the Chinese fishing nets; these fishing nets have withstood history itself and are still the major fishing tools. All in all Cochin has something to offer to everybody. The young and restless can experience the vivid nightlife; the newly married can simply admire the Portuguese romance still left over and if you’ve seen all life has to offer simply enter the city to relive

The Jewish Synagogue

If ever the complete cultural extravaganza of a city was to be incorporated in a single beautiful monument, it is this. The Jewish Synagogue is not just a peaceful prayer place, it also houses some of the most intricately exquisite Chinese hand painted tiles and polished metallic frames with donor’s names. What makes this Synagogue most special is the benevolence showered upon it by rulers. The Synagogue was brought to the ground during the European invasion but the Dutch helped finance its construction as it stands today. If you happen to be in Cochin you defiantly cannot miss its best slice of tradition.

The Dutch Palace

Cochin’s European rulers were not only benevolent but they also gifted generously. The Dutch Palace as its name suggests was erected to mystifying perfection by the Dutch to be gifted to the Rajah of Cochin in 1555. However, the Dutch did lose some of their generosity and took over the Palace in 1663 after which it was renovated and kept as memorabilia. After the Dutch takeover of the Palace no ruler has stayed there till date.

The Santa Cruz Basilica

As you walk into the Santa Cruz Basilica you notice that the mammoth structure spells out Gothic architecture; complete with lofty spires that seem to reach for the skies. You suddenly notice a soft touch to the fortress of solitude in the form of exceptional frescos and colourful wall painting, each with their own story to tell. Later, as you whisper a holy prayer, feel the spirit of the Lord adorn your body with holy energy.

Chinese Fishing Nets

The Chinese Fishing Nets were imported into Cochin around the time of Emperor Kublai Khan. Since then they have not only stood the test of time but borne witness to the meticulous use of resources. Today, these nets hang in rest from long teak wood pillars at Fort Cochin, a sight one must see to believe entirely.

Hill Palace Museum

The Hill Palace museum is no less than a master piece of archaeology and it’s not so because of the grand display of artefacts or even their preserved state. The Museum enters the list of marvels because when you enter inside there is a sudden metamorphosis and you relive the era of the royalty. The utensils and crown jewels reflect on the glory days still draped in gold; while you vividly picture the Rajah sitting on his throne. If you did have the desire to travel back in time, no place is as perfect to fulfil it.

St. Francis Church

The St. Francis Church is the offspring of religion and a historians dream. Built as early as 1510, it is the first Gothic Church our erstwhile European visitors built on Indian soil. If not for prayer, do visit this Church simply to be a part of Cochin’s European connection. Currently St. Francis is managed by the Church of South India, a Protestant section
