Kannur is home to several places of tourist importance dating back to the European era including those of the Portuguese, French, Dutch and the British among others.

Fort St. Angelos, located on the western side of Kannur city, is one of the most important forts built by the Portuguese viceroy, Don Francisco De Almeida in the year 1505. The fort stands to this day as a symbol of European power of the times. Though the fort changed hands several times, it ultimately became a British possession in 1790.The British rebuilt it and made it their most important bastion in Malabar. The fort presently is well preserved and is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.

It was here that Raider captain was imprisoned.
