Guruvayoor

Guruvayur, known the world over as the abode of Lord Sree Guruvayurappan, is located at a distance of 29 kms North West of Trissur, the cultural capital of Kerala.   Guruvayur is one of the most important pilgrimage centers in South India and is also given the name of “Bhoolokavaikunta- the heaven on earth” by the Hindu devotees.

Guruvayur Temple

Guruvayoor temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Mahavishnu, one of the Hindu gods. The deity here is said to be over 5000 year old and is housed in the square sreekovil, the sacred sanctum sanctorum.  The temple is the 2nd most famous temple in Kerala after Sabarimala.

The temple attracts devotees in thousands as it is believed that the deity has healing powers. The temple of Guruvayur holds the distinction of being home to the largest number of marriages conducted in Kerala and also is the preferred choice for the first feeding ceremony of a child

Apart from the idol of Lord Krishna there are also idols of other prominent deities such as Ganapathy, Sree Aiyappa and Kavil Bhagavathy. The walls of the sanctum sanctorum are inlaid with exquisite mural paintings and carvings. In the outer enclosure of the temple there is a 33.5 meter high gold plated flag post.

Several offerings are made by the devotees to propitiate the deity and range from Archana (offering of flowers) to the expensive and elaborate Thulabharam where a devotee is weighed against offering of bananas, sugar, jaggery, coconuts etc.

Entry in to Guruvayoor temple is strictly restricted and only Hindus are allowed entry. Dress code is prescribed for both men and women. Entrance to the temple is from the eastern side only.
Demographics
Guruvayur presently has a population of 21,187(2001 census) with males constituting 46% of the population and females 54%. Guruvayur has an average literacy rate of 85%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 86%, and female literacy is 85%. In Guruvayoor, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

HOW TO REACH GURUVAYUR

By Road
Guruvayur is easily accessible from every part of the country both by road and rail. The National highway passes through Kunnamkulam which is just 8 kms away from Guruvayur. The private bus stand is on the eastern side of the temple, near Manjulal (the banyan tree) and there are buses plying from Trissur to Guruvayur every 5 minutes. And a drive from Trissur to Guruvayur by car takes only half an hour. The KSRTC (Kerala State Transport Corporation) operates buses to Guruvayoor from all major cities of kerala. Bus services are also available to all major South Indian destinations from Guruvayur such as Madras, Madurai, Palani, Salem, Coimbatore, Thiruchandoor, Mysore, Mangalore, Uduppi and Mookambika among others.
 
By rail
Guruvayur is connected to the Madras-Mangalore main line at Thrissur and the railway station is located on the eastern side of the temple.  Guruvayur railway station has computerized ticket booking facility and tickets can be booked to any locations from here. Devotees coming from Mangalore side can get down at the Kuttippuram railway station and those from the Madras/Trivandrum side can get down at Thrissur.

By air
For those wanting to reach Guruvayur by flight, one can either get down at  Kochi international airport (Nedumbassery)  80 kms from Guruvayur or the Calicut International airport that is located  100 kms away. All major international flight services are operated from these airports.
