Alleppey or Allapuzha as the warm villagers call it is a small, green town dotted so perfectly with canals and clear ponds, you can feel God’s craftsmanship. As you roam the tiny streets and venture out the environment of the backwater town envelopes one with the serenity of a dream. Once on the backwater cruise you’ll almost forget that Alleppey is the heart of Kerala’s coir industry. Water of course is Allepey’s most coveted feature, in fact you can opt skip a hotel and stay on a primitive yet luxurious houseboat.
Kuttanad, the land of welcoming people and delicious food is home to one of Kerala’s most revered delicacies, the Karimeen fish. If you do ever have enough of the relaxation, the boatmen will let you catch your lunch and maybe cook it too. When you’re not angling or romancing the backwaters you can write that book you always dreamed about.
Vijaya Beach Park unlike the rest of Alleppey is always buzzing with energy and merry makers. This is the place where you bring the family in and click enough pictures to last you a lifetime. Unfortunately the park is open only between 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm.
Sea View Park is another entertaining beach side picnic spot in Alleppey. Go for a boat ride or take a dip in the cool swimming pool; it’s your turf to explore.
The Sree Krishna temple is a tall piece of testimony that reflects the people’s faith in God. Built in a fine, ethnical and intricate style of architecture indigenous to Kerala, the Ambalapuzzha temple is as well known for its “prashad” as it is for its deity. In this temple the lovable Lord Krishna blesses his disciples with a delicious milk porridge they call Palpayassam. While there, try not to get carried away by its aroma and take a look at the finest wall paintings in Alleppey.
Most people that visit Alleppey cannot believe their eyes when they enter the factory. The lazy surroundings are suddenly replaced by toiling labourers pumping the heart of Kerala’s coir industry and unknowingly fuelling Kerala’s economy. The coir factory is a must see for more than one reason though. Making of the fine rope itself is an art form one must experience.
When you hear about the Kettuvelloms or the house boats of Kerala you imagine yourself in a primitive wooden boats floating along the backwaters. But, think again; the house boat cruises are not primitive anymore. Standing at 80 feet in length and housing a crew of 3, these are no less than a star hotel. Some of the modern Kettuvelloms are complete with a blue swimming pool, an intriguing angling lounge and a gourmet kitchen. But of course you must step aboard this Godly abode to experience it first hand.
Alleppey is best visited from January through March and September through December.
