The Janardhana Swamy Temple was erected 200 years ago amidst the entertaining folklore that surrounds it. It is said that a Portuguese ship was caught in a tempest and was near wreckage. But, as soon as the weary crew spotted the temple their ship was safely brought to shore. The Captain then graciously donated a massive bell to the temple to express his gratitude. As time and tide have passed the folklore has become as integral to the temple as the mortar used to build it.
